About the Owner
Dottie Li, founder and CEO of TransPacific Communications, is an expert on Cross-Cultural Communications and workforce diversity. In her role as a coach, speaker, consultant, trainer, and writer, Ms. Li has helped thousands of non-native English employees and the Westerners who work with them break cultural barriers and improve cultural competencies in the workplace.
Born and raised in China, Ms. Li had aspirations of becoming a broadcaster in the U.S. after listening to the Voice of America broadcasts as a young girl. She started out as a newspaper reporter in China before coming to the United States to pursue a graduate degree.
Before her work with TransPacific Communications, Ms. Li’s background in the U.S. includes five years as a producer at C-SPAN and a stint at The White House from 1997 to 2001, where she traveled the globe handling presidential advance assignments. She also served as a corporate spokesperson for Inova Health Systems, a public relations firm executive, and as a communications director for several large nonprofit organizations. Ms. Li can also be heard as the "voice" and voice coach for Rosetta Stone's Mandarin-language products.
In 1996, The National Journal named Ms. Li "One of Washington's Movers and Shakers." She was recognized as one of "Maryland's Top 100 Women" in 2015 for her "professional accomplishment, community leadership and mentoring" by The Daily Record. She was the recipient of the “Best Cross-Cultural Communicator of the Year” in 2013 by the Maryland Washington Minority Companies Association. And, in February 2016, she was named an “Outstanding Chinese American” by the Alliance Cultural Media, Inc. Her groundbreaking work has been profiled in several publications, including China Daily and ALIST Magazine. She was also featured on Voice of America’s live television program.
In addition to conducting training, coaching, and seminars on Cross-Cultural Communications and diversity training for both private and public sectors, Ms. Li has keynoted at more than 50 events. She had shared her inspirational story of assimilation into the American Dream at high-profile events for many government agencies, including the USDA, Department of the Treasury, Department of Justice, Department of Commerce, Department of Education, HUD, Defense Logistics Agency, NASA, NOAA, Food and Drug Administration, and NIH. She has also given keynote addresses for Northrop Grumman, Sodexo, United Way Worldwide, Aerotek, Fannie Mae, MGM Women’s Leadership Conference, and many other prestigious corporations.
Ms. Li is an active member of the Asian American community. She serves as a Commissioner on the Maryland Governor's Commission on Asian Pacific American Affairs and as a Board Member of the Governor's Wellmobile Program Advisory Board in Maryland. She is a member of the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA), Asian American Government Executives Network (AAGEN), Federal Asian Pacific American Council (FAPAC), and several other organizations.
She is a volunteer fitness coach and an aspiring runner of 5Ks.
Ms. Li is a graduate of the University of Mobile in Alabama and Hefei University in her native China.
